Herbert Leo Dunning, age 100, was called home by the Lord the morning of February 6, 2021.
Herb was a beloved man with names including brother, husband, father, grandfather, and g-g-pa. He was born in 1920 to Herbert and Nellie Leona Dunning. They lived on a farm in Deepwater, Missouri. He had two older sisters and four younger sisters: Verda, Josephine, Marge, Eva, Retha, and Audrey. As a member of the greatest generation, he grew up during the Great Depression and served our country in World War II. He maintained and repaired aircraft sheet metal parts and equipment. After the war, he was a crane operator at Armco Steel but never forgot his farming roots. Herb swept the love of his life, Rosemary Lewellen, off her feet at a roller-skating-rink and they married on March 5, 1946. They had two children, William and Beverly Dunning.
Faith was a pivotal component of Herb's life. He was a deacon at New Salem Southern Baptist church and believed in making sure Christ was at the center of his life. He would often pray heartfelt, grateful, and concise prayers before meals at family get-togethers that set the tone just right. Herb was an excellent carpenter and shared this pastime with his son and grandson. They created furniture together and strengthened familial bonds. Herb also enjoyed being close to nature through gardening and bird watching. Branson, Missouri will always hold memories of Herb and the many family vacations spent there.
Herb lived a long life and touched the lives of many. He was preceded in death by parents, Herbert and Nellie Leona Dunning; wife, Rosemary Dunning; daughter, Bev Dunning; and sisters, Verda, Josephine, Eva, and Retha. Herb is survived by his son William Dunning, two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters; and a host of extended family, nieces, nephews, and other beloved friends.
A graveside service will be held at Harmony Cemetery in Appleton City, Missouri.
