Mary Charlotte Dyer, 99, died on November 26, 2017, at the New Mark Care Center in Kansas City, MO.
Charlotte was born February 18, 1918, in Lincoln, MO. Her parents, Carl and Ada (Allgaier) West, preceded her in death. She graduated from Lincoln High School and St. Teresa College (Avila University). She was married in 1939 to Charles Arnold “Reddy” Dyer, who preceded her in death in 1980. The couple moved to Buckner, MO, in 1941 where she resided for most of her adult life.
She was a teacher at two different elementary schools prior to commencing her career as a librarian. She was employed by the Mid-Continent Library system and received a fifty-year service pin. For most of those years she was the Branch Librarian at Buckner. During her tenure the library expanded from one small room to the present Buckner Branch facility. For several years after retirement from full-time employment, she continued as a substitute librarian and conducted the Branch’s weekly “Storytime” where she read stories to children and supervised the accompanying crafts.
She was one of the founding parishioners of the Catholic Church of the Santa Fe and was a member of the Altar Society. She participated in numerous civic organizations during her lifetime including the Boy Scouts, PTA, the Fort Osage School Booster Club, Fort Osage Fire Protection District Auxiliary, American Business Women’s Association, Red Hat Society, AARP, the St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary and as a volunteer reading aide at the Buckner Elementary School.
She was co-editor of the Buckner Centennial Commemorative Booklet. In 1987 she was selected as the Lewis & Clark Trail Days Co-Parade Marshal. In 1992 she received the Fort Osage High School Alumni Association Warrior Award.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two younger sisters: Virginia Weymouth and Martha Benton. She is survived by three sons, Charles A. Dyer (Marilyn) of Atherton, CA; James “Jim” W. Dyer (Janel) of Collinsville, IL, and Richard “Smokey” A. Dyer (Julie) of Kansas City; nine grandchildren, Jamie Waggoner (Nick), Kristine Dyer, Shauna Luce (Brian), Erin Zwahlen (Drake), Debbie Karlstrand (Brian), Kathleen Hackett (Stefan), Kim Drage (Dan), Matt Dyer and Kerry Dyer; and 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was an example in her ability to always accept and make the absolute best of whatever situation life had dealt her.
As many described her, she was a true “lady”.
The Rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. on December 1, 2017, at the Speaks Buckner Chapel followed by a visitation from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 am on December 2 at the Catholic Church of the Santa Fe. Burial will follow at the Buckner Hill Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Altar Society of the Church of the Santa Fe or to the Fort Osage High School Alumni Association.
The family desires to express their deepest thanks to the New Mark Care Center for their outstanding care and compassion.
