Dorothy Evans

February 16, 1919 — June 26, 2003

Dorothy Strohwig Evans, 84, of Independence died Thur., June 26, 2003 at the Independence Regional Health Center. Services will be 11:00 am, Thur., July 3, at the First Baptist Church of Independence. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Holton Cemetery, Holton, KS. Contributions are suggested to the Dorothy S. Evans Scholarship Fund, C/O The First Baptist Church of Independence. Dorothy was born Feb. l6, l9l9, in Sedalia, Mo. She graduated From Central Missouri State College with a BS. in education in l94l. She moved to Independence and started teaching at McCoy school in l947 and taught there for 30 years. She then taught at Randall school for 2 years retiring in l979. In l950 she married Joe Strohwig and acquired a step-daughter, Sonja, who she raised and loved dearly. Joe passed away in l979 and in l987 an old college sweet-heart came back into her life and she married Edwin Evans until his death. Dorothy was a very active member in many organizations serving in various capacities often as president. She worked tirelessly in her church, First Baptist Church of Independence. She was in the American Association of University Women, GFWC NuEra Study Club where she served on the state board for 8 years, Knife and Fork Club, She was a charter member of the national Retired Teachers board, and Friends of the National Frontier Trails Center.
Dorothy gave many humorous readings when she was younger. She was an excellent teacher and her students loved her because wherever she was she brought fun and an exuberance that was contagious. She was a caring and thoughtful friend. Her joy in life and her generous spirit will be missed by all who loved her. She is survived by a daughter, Sonja Ward of Mobile, Ala., a grand-daughter, Katrina Sallew and two great grandsons, of Mobile. A grandson Michael Shawn Ward and two great grand-daughters of Hawaii. A nephew Lewis Long and family of Colorado Springs, Colo. and a niece Linda Landers and family of Independence.
