Shirley Ann (Ellington) Felter, 86 of Independence, MO passed away Friday, December 18, 2020 at Maywood Terrace Care Center. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, December 28, 2020 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. Visitation will be held under current Covid-19 restrictions to a 50-person maximum in our facility and masks are required. Private family service will be held with burial in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. The family suggest memorial contributions in her name to Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. Shirley was born September 21, 1934 in San Antonio, TX to Millard Duval and Alta Matilda (Olson) Ellington. She grew up in Moultrie, GA and graduated from high school there and later Valdosta State College before moving to Kansas City and receiving her Master’s in education from UMKC. She taught briefly in Topeka, KS and for over 30 years in the Independence School Dist. She was a grade school teacher, mainly teaching first grade in Randall, Wachter and Oldham elementary schools in Independence before she retired from full time teaching and began to substitute teach for a few more years. She was a long-time member of Christ United Methodist Church where she was active in Sunday School activities and visiting shut in member of the church. She also volunteered her time at the Community Services League. She is survived by; 2 daughters, Gloria Felter and husband, Lowell Crow and their son, Simon Crow and daughter Diana Crow and Beverly Parrish and husband Mike and their children, Brian Parrish, Hannah Benzing and Lucy Parrish; 3 brothers, Eugene Ellington and wife Helen, John Ellington and wife JoAnn and Coke Ellington and wife Martha Jane and numerous nieces, nephews, great nephew and former students who remember her fondly. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer “Joe” Felter, a daughter, Jo Anne Felter, a sister, Janet Christie Pugh, a niece and 2 nephews.
