Lawrence Irwin Fender, 98, Independence, MO passed away Thursday, December 27, 2012.
Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Stone Church, 1012 W. Lexington Ave, Independence, MO 64050, with a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Inunrment will be private at Mound Grove Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Stone Church Building Fund.
Irwin was born May 14, 1914 in Independence, MO the son of Frederick E. and Emma C. (Carstensen) Fender. He graduated from William Chrisman High School in 1932 and attended the Kansas City Business College of UMKC. Irwin learned to fly with Joe Jacobson at the Kansas City Municipal Airport. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp and was stationed at Bear Field, Ft Wayne, IN where he met he future wife, Marcella Martin. After WWII he returned home to begin construction with his father and cousin. In 1956 he started Fender Construction Company where he continued to build commercial buildings throughout the Kansas City area. Some of his projects included Adams Dairy, Farm & Home Savings, Mid-America Cinema, Nauvoo Visitors Center, Independence YMCA and the Wornall Home. He was a member Stone Church, and taught Sunday school for 25 years and served as a member of the Buildings and Grounds committee and the Finance committee. Irwin served on the Board of the Independence Regional Health Center, the Independence Chamber of Commerce, and the Kiwanis Club.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Marcella Fender of 68 years; children, David Fender of Texas, Paul Fender of Independence, Chris Fender and wife Jean of Milwaukee, WI, and Lorna Fender of Lee’s Summit; grandchildren, Carla, Darla, Lisa, Julie, Scott, Amy and their spouses, and Jennifer and Cristina, along with great grandchildren, great great grandchildren and many other family members.
