Ronald Fender

Ronald Edwin Fender died at his home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at the age of 83. Private inurnment with military honors will take place at MO State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO.

He is survived by his wife, Joy Fender, children Teri Brigham and Nick Lynn and their spouses Kevin Brigham and Leslie Patterson-Lynn, grandchildren Nathan Lynn, Neko Lynn and Josie Gross, and a great-grandson, Grayson Gross, brother Frank Fender and his spouse Betty Fender and their children Darrel Fender and Dawn Adams, and step-brother Arnold Lederer.

Ron was born in Appleton City, Missouri on January 30, 1933 to Edwin F. and Helen M. McCandless Fender. He spent his early adult years as a commercial painter before being drafted in the United States Army. He received training in the Army as a dental technician, and after being honorably discharged, started his own dental lab business. He decided to change careers, and pursue aviation working as a mechanic prior to getting his instructor's license. He became an aerobatic pilot traveling around the Midwest to perform Air Shows, and taught many students how to fly. Later in his career, he leveraged his skills as a certified airplane welder, and became a commercial welder with Northrop Wilcox. Towards the end of his career he became a manufacturing engineer at Northrop Wilcox before retiring.

His life's accomplishments include: Military service in the United States Army; commercial painter; dental technician; commercial welder; manufacturing engineer; flight instructor; charter pilot; acrobatic exhibition flying; customized and rebuilt several cars; designed, built and raced boats; earned several aviation ratings including his Instructor's Rating, Airframe and Power Plant Rating, Multi-Engine and Instrument Rating, and the Helicopter Rating; designed and built airplanes; and bicycled over 25,000 miles. The first love of his life was his wife, the second flying.
