John “Jack” R. Ferguson, 75, Independence, MO passed away Nov. 7, 2012. A Memorial service will be at 3 pm, Sat., Nov. 24 at Good Shepherd Community of Christ, 4341 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64133. Visitation will begin before the service at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to the Lion’s Club International Foundation, the World Church of Jesus Christ, 12809 E. 48th St. S., Independence, MO 64055 or St. Luke’s Health Care Hospice, 4401 Wornall Rd., K.C. MO 64111.
Jack was born Oct. 23, 1937 in Columbus, Ohio. While age thirteen, he became the youngest Eagle Scout in central Ohio. His education included an A.A. from Graceland College; B.L.S. Graceland College, attendance at Harbor College in Los Angles, California State College-Long Beach, Rockhurst College in Kansas City, Masters Degree in Religious Studies from the School of the Restoration, completed course work for a Doctorate of Philosophy in Business Administration from Columbia Southern University and an Honorary Doctorate in Theology from World University.
Jack was involved in many civic organizations as well. He had served as President of the following organizations: Herald Publishing House, the Ferguson Group, Independence Board of Education, Independence Chamber of Commerce and the World Church of Jesus Christ. He was named Independence Citizen of the Year in 1979. He served many years as a full-time minister for the Community of Christ. He was very active in the Lion’s Club and received numerous International Presidential awards, membership keys and extension awards including serving as District Governor and Lions Club International Global Membership Area Team Leader. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Progressive Fellowship and was presented the Lions Ambassador of Goodwill Award in 2001.
Jack was preceded in death by brothers Bob & Don Ferguson. He is survived by his wife Jan Ferguson, of the home; son Steve Ferguson and wife Colleen, Independence, MO; daughter Connie Obos and husband Steve, Reno, NV; grandchildren Lindsay Dohrman and husband Caleb, Lafayette, IN; Jason Sifers and fiancée Catherine Stallone; SSgt David Sifers and wife SRA Kelly Sifers, all of Las Vegas, NV; Sarah Sifers, Reno, NV; SRA Steven Ferguson, Aviano, Italy; great-granddaughter Claire Dohrman; brother Ed Ferguson and wife Colleen, Independence, MO; brother-in-law Bob Shipman and wife Carolyn, Pipe Creek, TX; nephew TSgt Scott Shipman, Rapid City, SD and many other nieces and nephews.
