Vernon Fjeld, 73, of Independence, MO, passed away, Friday, July 23, 2004 at his residence. Services will be 2:00 p.m., Tuesday at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Monday at the chapel. Donations may be made to the Crossroads Hospice or to Abiding Savior Lutheran Church. Vernon was born March 4, 1931 in Aneta ND to Melvin and Clara (Flohaug) Fjeld. He grew up in North Dakota and graduated from Aneta High School in 1950. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1952-54 during the Korean Conflict. He then worked with his father on the family farm before attending North Dakota State University from 1958-62 graduating with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He then moved to California from 1962-71 working as an Aerospace Engineer for McDonald Douglas and North American Rockwell on the space capsule projects. In 1971 he went to work for the Veterans Administration in Butler, PA from 1971-74 and Marion IN from 1974-75, Butler PA from 1975-81 and for the Kansas City Veterans Administration from 1981 until he retired in 1993. He was married to Janice Vig in April of 1956, she survives him of the home. Other survivors include; a daughter, Linda K. Gall of Butler, PA; 4 sons, Anthony J. Fjeld and Larry K. Fjeld both of Independence, MO, Kevin R. Fjeld of Hollister, FL and Rodney J. Fjeld of Chico, CA; a sister, Delores Hedstrom of Mayville, ND; 2 brothers, Gerald Fjeld of Mesquite, NV and Roger Fjeld of Aneta, ND; 3 grandchildren and 3 step grandchildren.
