Esther Chappelow Friend who began her earthly life December 10, 1924 in Independence, Missouri was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus to begin her new life June 18, 2016.
Esther was born to Edwin G. Chappelow and Eva (Marsh) Chappelow in Independence, Missouri. Esther graduated from Blue Springs High School in 1942. She worked various jobs over the years, retiring from Jack Cooper Transport in 1989.
Esther was a member of the Eden Heights Congregation of the Community of Christ. She served as Women’s Leader there, bringing ministry and leadership. She lived a life of service for her God, her church, her family and friends.
She loved writing poetry and wrote poems for family and friends for special events in their lives. She loved music and sang in church choirs. For many years she and her husband, Daniel, hosted an annual Christmas Sing in their home to begin the Christmas season for family and friends. She was a kind, loving, joyful and graceful lady who will be deeply missed. She taught all her family how to live life joyfully, even in the face of adversity.
She married Daniel Friend on April 13, 1944 and they celebrated life together until Danny predeceased her July 13, 2002. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother F. Edwin Chappelow in 2006, her sister Mary (Chappelow) Dyer in 2008 and her grandson Chad Pennington in 2010.
She is survived by her brother Samuel Chappelow and his wife Marilyn of Independence, MO; her daughters Carolyn Friend of Grandview, MO; Sylvia Heinzle of Independence, MO; Debra Harring and her husband Don Harring of Kansas City, MO; and Marcia Friend of Marshall, MO; her granddaughter Holly Riner of Buckner, MO and granddaughter-in-law Lisa Pennington of Kansas City, MO; seven great grandchildren; 2 nephews, 3 nieces, 4 great-nieces and 6 great-nephews and 2 great-great nieces.
A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, June 23, with funeral service at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 24, both at Speaks Suburban Chapel.
