“TO BE YOURSELF IN A WORLD THAT IS CONSTANTLY TRYING TO
MAKE YOU SOMETHING ELSE IS THE GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT”

RALPH WALDO EMERSON

Harvey Reed Fullerton Jr. passed away peacefully at his home on January 24, 2021 surrounded by loving family. Reed was a fifth generation Jackson Countian and lifelong resident of Independence, Missouri. He was born in Houston, Texas to Henrietta Mitchell Fullerton and Harvey Reed Fullerton Sr. on May 28, 1941. Within a year, the family returned to the family home on North Main Street in Independence.

Reed had an endless supply of energy and loved being “out and about” to visit friends, family, his favorite restaurants, and the boats. He looked for ways to help others and loved the opportunity to take his neighbors’ dogs for walks. A bit of a mischief-maker and prankster, his friends always knew to expect the mysterious shoulder tap.

Reed loved being up on all the latest news and looked forward to reading multiple newspapers daily along with news broadcasts. Family and friends would often receive calls starting with, “Just cluing you in that ….” A keen observer and excellent judge of character, Reed had definite opinions and preferred not to speak ill of others.

His sisters both agree that he was often the wisest of the three.

Reed had an incredible work ethic. As a child he arranged odd jobs for barter, which included setting up chairs at the neighborhood funeral home in exchange for listening to the police radio on weekends. His first official job was having a daily Examiner newspaper route that included the former President of the United States, Harry S. Truman. In his late teens, he had a large motor route with hundreds of subscribers for the Examiner in Raytown. This led to many years as a delivery man for several blueprint companies to area architectural and engineering firms, and night deliveries from pharmacies to local and regional nursing homes. Until his passing, Reed continued to deliver the Examiner to his fellow residents at The Fountains and enjoyed socializing while on his route. He also worked as an elevator operator for the Continental Hotel in downtown Kansas City and as a week-end dispatcher for the Independence Ambulance Company. From these associations, he maintained contact with a lengthy list of long-term friends.

From his deliveries throughout the Kansas City area Reed developed an avid appreciation for different foods, exploring neighborhood lunch counters and restaurants with a willingness to “try anything once” and a never-ending quest for oxtail soup, lamb shanks, and stewed kidneys. Reed enjoyed dining out and was a regular at many area restaurants. Reed loved and missed Italian Gardens on Baltimore and Sanderson’s Lunch on Eighth Street. He enjoyed regular breakfasts at Englewood Cafe and dinners at Anthony’s and Kross Lounge (Ernie’s) where his standing order was known to all.

Reed greatly valued the friendship and the support provided by Kay Freyer-Rose and being able to “blow off some steam” when necessary. He always felt better after talking with Kay. Reed very much enjoyed his friendship and time spent with Carmen and Tom Gieseki. Carmen’s regular visits were instrumental in helping Reed maintain his continued independence and lifting his spirits during the pandemic. The family thanks the staff of The Fountains at Greenbriar, Interim Healthcare, and Phoenix Hospice for their care and support.

Reed was preceded in death by his parents, Henrietta Mitchell Fullerton and Harvey Reed Fullerton Sr. He is survived by his sisters, Sally Fullerton Schwenk and Margaret Tacy Groves; his nieces, Anne E. Schwenk and Katherine Schwenk-Runels (Brian); grandnieces Linden E. Runels and Kendal E. Runels; and cousins Linda Lynch Bonowitz (Don), Peggy Lynch (Mike), Christina Fullerton Jones (Bob), and William B. Fullerton, III (Kandi).
