Leonard Davison Garlick

November 2, 1926 — August 11, 2006

Dr. Leonard Davison Garlick, 79 of Kansas City, MO passed away Aug. 3, 2006 at Independence Regional Health Center. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m., Sat. Aug 12, 2006 at the Pleasant Heights Community of Christ Church with visitation being held from 10:00 am until service time. The family suggests contributions to the Pleasant Heights Congregation Scholarship Fund, 4341 Blue Ridge Blvd., KCMO 64133. Dr. Garlick was born to Raymond A. and Hazel Gates Garlick on Nov. 2, 1926 in Cranston, Rhode Island. Leonard graduated from high school, and then served in the Air Corps during WWII. After his tour of duty, he earned an Associate of Arts Degree at Graceland College in Lamoni, IA, and a Bachelors degree from Boston University. He moved to Independence in 1956 where in 1960 he reconnected with his Graceland sweetheart Ellen McElroy and they married in 1964. He taught high school social studies and mathematics in Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa. His penchant for learning caused the couple to move to Iowa City where Leonard earned two additional degrees; a Masters and PH.D., both in Educational Administration. He accepted a position as a Specialist in Management Information for the State Department of Education in Baltimore. He retired in 1990 from the University of Maryland System and moved to Kansas City. Leonard�s life work was in the field of education. He authored several publications in various journals. Studying and reading were his passion. An active lifetime member of the Community of Christ, Leonard held the priesthood office of Elder. He served as church school teacher and director, youth leader, financial officer and was pastor of the Towson, Maryland congregation. Leonard held memberships in Phi Delta Kappa, the National Education Association, the Association for Institutional Research and the Optimist Club. In addition, he volunteered as a Temple Ambassador for the Community of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters Georgene Albro and Elsie Cummings Albro. Leonard is survived by his wife Ellen Garlick of Kansas City, MO.
