James Gilmore

James Gilmore, 86, of Independence, MO passed away October 15, 2018. A visitation will be held from 1-2:00 p.m. followed by a 2:00 p.m. service on Friday, October 19, at Mt. Washington Baptist Church, 9623 E. Independence Ave., Independence, MO 64053. Burial at Mt. Washington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the church. James was born September 11, 1932 in Kansas City, KS. In his early years, he served in the Coast Guard, and was a member of Golden Gloves Boxing. Throughout his life, James was active, serving as a baseball coach, scout master, church deacon, umpire, and dock builder. He was also a 60 year Mason. He worked for 40 years as a pressure and maintenance man for The Gas Service Company. He then worked for Worlds of Fun for 15 years. James was preceded in death by his parents; and one son, Jamie Gilmore. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Laila (Starks) Gilmore; four daughters, Rhonda Shields, Kerry Pace, Kielee Sturman and Lauren Rose; two sisters, Helen Stockwell and Michelle Pamplin; seven grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
