Aurora Sara “Brodie” Gorbet, 80, passed away on December 5, 2020 in Kansas City, MO.
Brodie was born on April 2, 1940 in Topeka, KS to Paul J. Polina, Sr. and Edith (Marquez) Polina. She was a student at St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduated from William Chrisman in the class of 1958. She went straight to work for Percy Kent Bag Co. and was employed there for 15 years. She then took a position as a setup machinist for the Thomas J. Lipton Company, from which she retired in 1999 after 24 years of service.
Brodie married James Joseph Gorbet on March 4, 1966 and to this union were born two sons, James Joseph “Joey” and David Michael. She dearly loved her family, and she worked very hard to ensure their needs were met. However, she was by no means a pushover – anytime a youngster got out of line, she warned them that she would let Rufus, her attack dog, out of the basement. It was her own secret for many, many years that Rufus was 100% fictitious!
Brodie was a longtime parishioner of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She also participated in the Altar & Rosary Society as well as Our Lady of Guadalupe. She was a fan of watching old black & white movies on the Turner Classic Movies network. At home or even while accompanying James on a fishing trip, she always had a book to read nearby. She and James loved to take car trips to visit Branson’s Christmas displays. Time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandson made her heart sing. If anyone needed something, she would find a way to get it quickly. She loved unconditionally and without hesitation. Her bright personality, her hard work ethic, and of course her ornery sense of humor will be truly missed.
Survivors include her two sons James Joseph “Joey” Gorbet and David Michael Gorbet; grandchildren Kelsey Rodewald (husband Tyler), Courtney Conway (husband Cameron), Zachary Gorbet, Kamara Gorbet, Kylee Gorbet, and Marli Gorbet; great-grandson James Rodewald; sister Virginia Macias (husband Tony); many extended family and friends; and beloved furry companion Tank.
She was preceded in death by her husband James; parents Paul J. Polina Sr. and Edith Polina; and two siblings Mary Tinoco and Paul Polina Jr.
The Rosary will be prayed on Monday, December 14, 2020, at 5:30pm, with visitation to follow from 6-8pm, both at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St. in Independence. Due to county restrictions, the Mass of Christian Burial will be closed to the public. She will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery.
