“Our Country is in mourning, for a soldier died today.” Gerald Grace, 93, of Independence, MO passed away June 26, 2016. Memorial Visitation will be from 5-7pm Thursday, June 30, 2016 at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Gerald was born on September 23, 1922 in Springfield, MO to Marion and Nellie (Reaves) Grace. After graduating from Northeast High School, Gerald joined the Army, and was a veteran of WWII. While in the Army he served in Attu, Kiska, Shemya, Adak, and Amchitka. Gerald served his Country proudly earning several decorations: Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon (One Battle Star), American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Five Overseas Stripes (28 Months Overseas), and the Alaska Command Service Award. After his outstanding service to our Country, Gerald returned home to Kansas City, where he continued to serve his community. Gerald joined the Kansas City Fire Department in 1947, and was elevated to Captain. He retired after 28 years of service in 1975. Gerald was a member of the VFW and Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed fishing, baseball, and sports in general. Survivors include; daughters Carolyn Dyer, Kathleen Spicer, Francine Murdock, Susan Grace, Mary Grace, and Stephanie Conover; sons Steven Grace and John Grace; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; a large extended family and a host of friends. Gerald is preceded in death by his parents, wife Anna Grace, sister Mary Nash, and special friend Lois Wilson.
