Opie G. Graham, 78 of Independence, MO passed away Thursday July 29, 2004 while resting peacefully in his home. Visitation will be 2-5:00 pm Sunday, August 1st at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Memorial services will be 2:00 pm Monday, August 2nd at the chapel. Burial in Blue Springs Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Jackson County Free Health Clinic c/o Truman Heartland Community Foundation, 300 N. Osage St, Independence, MO 64050. Opie was born January 2, 1926 in Naylor, AR to Oppie and Georgia (Gist) Graham. He was one of seven children. Opie grew up on the family farm where he worked until he volunteered for service in WWII at the age of 18. Mr. Graham proudly served in the U.S. Army in Europe as an Infantryman in 1944 and 1945 under the 66th Infantry "Panther� Division. In 1947, Opie married Geraldine Bales, and in 1948 they settled in Independence, MO. Their marriage produced five children, all of whom still live and work in the area. Mr. Graham worked for many, many years as a concrete contractor, and was widely known for his skill in operating a Bobcat tractor. Most people involved in the construction business in Independence likely knew Opie and were happy to work with him. Family was always first with Opie, and he displayed unquestionable loyalty and support for all those he cared for. He had an amazing sense of humor that will be sorely missed. Mr. Graham is survived by his wife of 57 years, Geraldine H. Graham; children Yvonne and husband Ron Hagaman, Ron and wife Diane, Dale, Ken and wife Becky, Patti Bryan; 7 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brother John Elwood Graham of Landers, TX; a host of nieces and nephews including special niece Juanita Mauldin who was like a sister and countless friends who also considered Opie family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Bill, Clayton, Tommy, Glen and sister Noreen.
