Merle Ivan Gray, 89, Independence, MO passed away Monday, March 17, 2014.
Merle was born January 20, 1925 in Brookfield, MO the son of Albert and Mary (Giulford) Gray. He was a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran, serving during WWII. He retired in 1982 from Armco Steel as supervisor. Merle was a member of the Nazarene Church. He enjoyed traveling, snow and water skiing, fishing, scuba diving and motorcycle trail riding with his family.
He married Verna Hollenbeck on February 9, 1945, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include his grandson, Steven Michael Gray, Jr., and wife Lindsay; great granddaughter, Lilah Gray; daughter-in-law, Cathy Arnold and husband Harold; and additional nieces, nephews, and family. He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Michael Gray, Sr., in 1987; sister, Patricia Cunningham; and his parents.
Visitation will be from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Friday, March 21, 2014 at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. A celebration of Merle’s life will be follow at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Private inurnment will be at a later date at Floral Hills East.
