Martin Thomas Groat, of Blue Springs, MO, passed away on Sunday, January 2, 2022. He was 75.
A memorial visitation will be held from 5-6pm on Thursday, January 13th with a memorial mass following at 6pm, both at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 600 N Liberty St, Independence, MO 64050.
Martin was born on September 20, 1946 in Cadillac, MI to Thomas and Marcella (Leoffler) Groat. He attended St. Catherine Labourne Catholic School and graduated from Bishop Montgomery High School, both in Torrance, CA. Martin went on to attain his Associates Degree from Golden West College in Huntington Beach, CA. He proudly served as an airplane mechanic in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. After the war, Martin began a successful and happy career in the telephone industry, first as a technician for AT&T, retiring as a trainer after almost 30 years, then working as a training material developer for Ericsson, retiring with them in 2012. After retirement, Martin enjoyed building model trains with his wife, Melinda. Martin also was troop leader for Boy Scouts of America, a member of the Knights of Columbus and of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Independence. Martin was loved by so many and will be greatly missed.
Martin is preceded in death by his parents.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Melinda; his beautiful daughters, Erin (Kevin) Williams and Mary (Michael) McIntosh; grandchildren, Christopher and Matthew McIntosh and Hayley and Mikayla Hixon; and 8 siblings, Tom (Diane) Travis, Dennis (Denise) Groat; Dorothy (Felix) Lococco, Marjorie (Gordon) Burns, Elaine (Kent) Ketell, Timothy Groat, James (Susan) Groat, and Elizabeth (Eric) Risberg.
