Raymond Lawrence Gunn, 89, of Independence, MO, returned home to God Wednesday, February 25, 2015. He was born September 11, 1925, in Ft. Madison, Iowa, to William H. and Cloda M. Gunn. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles; and sisters, Wilma Tucker and Thelma Francis.
Ray served in the United States Navy Seabees from November 11, 1943 through April 15, 1946. He graduated from Graceland College with an Associate’s Degree in 1948. He then completed his Bachelor of Music Education and Master’s degree in the same subject from Drake University. He was married to Alice Irene Folkes on September 5, 1948. He taught instrumental music in elementary through high school in Iowa for 13 years and in the Kansas City Missouri Public schools for 25 years, retiring in 1988.
In Independence, he served as President of Meals on Wheels; President and Lieutenant Governor of the Optimist Club of Independence; Friends of Youth (Independence); as pastor of Community of Christ congregation in Logan, Iowa, and Blue Ridge congregation in Independence, Missouri, and also helped assist in various youth camps throughout his years. He played pipe organ and directed the handbell choir at the Blue Ridge congregation.
He is survived by his wife, Alice (Folkes) Gunn, formerly of England; two sons, Russell J. and wife Wendy Gunn, Kelvin R. and wife Marilyn Gunn; grandson, Randy and wife Suzanne Mwirigi Gunn; granddaughter, Krista and husband Shane Pritchett; granddaughter, Ashli Gunn; granddaughter Celeste and husband Michael Tilley; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as a host of friends.
A memorial service will be held at the Blue Ridge Community of Christ congregation, 3371 Blue Ridge Blvd., Independence, MO, 64052, on Saturday, March 7th, 2015, at 2:00pm. Family will greet friends an hour prior to the service in the fellowship hall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to Blue Ridge Community of Christ, Outreach International, or Kansas City Hospice House is suggested.
