Darrell L. Hagaman, 77, Independence, MO, formerly of Joplin, MO, passed away Nov. 17, 2013. Services will be 10 am, Thursday, Nov. 21 at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055; interment at Mound Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Wed. at the chapel. Darrell was born Oct. 5, 1935 in Van Nuys, CA. He attended UCLA, the University of CA Northridge, San Jose St. and earned a B.A. in Religion from Graceland College. He served as a full-time Community of Christ minister throughout his life and also taught high school for two years in Lancaster, CA. In his early years he worked as a lifeguard at Santa Monica Beach, among other places. He loved youth ministry and developed hiking and high adventure backpacking programs for youth of the church and for children with diabetes. He also developed camping programs for children with cystic fibrosis. While living in Salem, OR, he served as President of the Salem Forum on Refugee Affairs and was a member of the Lions Club. In Joplin, he served as President of the Habitat for Humanity. Darrell loved music and played the trumpet in bands and sang in choir. He practiced Tai Chi and loved his dogs. He was the official greeter for ten Dog & Cat Adopt-a-thons in St. Louis. He and his wife Larrene, also served congregations in St. Louis for five years and Joplin for twenty years before moving to Independence after the Joplin tornado.
Darrell is survived by his wife of fifty-five years Larrene Hagaman, of the home; daughter Dara Ashby and husband Blake, St Louis, MO; universal children Rosalie Thatcher, Chicago, IL; Sokha Phoak, Everett, WA; JoJo Sonillo, Manila, The Philippines; Shirley Johnson, Carthage, MO; Julie Xiong and husband Ty Thao, Overland Park, KS; Pamela Hookham and husband Bob, Lincoln, NE; brothers Wayne Hagaman and wife Beverly, Huntington Beach, CA; Gene Hagaman and wife Nancy, Blue Springs MO; Ron Hagaman and wife Yvonne, sister Lorraine Austin and husband Bill, all of Independence MO; two grand dogs and many universal grandkids and great-grandkids.
