Joann Hamann

March 28, 1933 — October 8, 2016

Joann Hamann, 83, of Independence, MO peacefully passed away Saturday, October 8, 2016. A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 12. A Celebration of Life service will be at 3:00 pm on Sunday, October 23 at the Stone Church Community of Christ, 1012 W. Lexington Ave, Independence, MO, 64052. Joann was born on March 28, 1933 in Clarksdale, MO to Lyle and Lula Gurwell. She graduated from Savannah High School in 1951 then attended Gard’s Business College. She worked for State Hospital #2 and then KFEQ radio station in St. Joseph. In 1955 she married Warren G. Hamann in Stewartsville, then moved to Independence. She worked for Ruppert Diecasting before becoming a full time stay at home mother. She was Noland School’s PTA President, a Skylark and Oriole leader, and also den mother for Cub Scouts. She served the community as an election judge and volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years. Joann was a member of the Laurel Club, and served as treasurer for the Shepherd’s Center. She was an active member of New Hope RLDS church. Other congregations she attended were Stone Church, Liberty Street, and Parkview where she served in many capacities. Joann will be remembered by her children Karen Colyer (David), Randall Hamann (Tyra), Vance Hamann (Stacey), and Karmi Anderson (Jason); brother Ray Gurwell (Faye); 15 grandchildren Timothy Colyer, Mary Heath (Brett), Jonathan Colyer (Jessie), Steven Colyer (Rachelle), Jacob Colyer, Caleb Colyer, Andrew Colyer, Tyler Hamann (Molly), Caylee Johnson (Joseph), Chelsea Ramirez (Tyler), Ryan Hamann (Chaelyn), Kaitlyn Hamann, Parker Anderson, Peyton Anderson, Brennan Anderson; 2 great-grandchildren Owen Heath and Elias Colyer; and many other family members. She was preceded in death by her husband Warren in 2010. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to New Hope Congregation.
