LeVergne B. Hammond, 85, of Independence, MO, passed away November 29, 2014. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, December 5, from 5-8 pm at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Inurnment with full Military Honors will be Saturday, December 6, at 11:00 am in Floral Hills Cemetery. LeVergne was born in Kansas City, MO on July 11, 1929 to LeVergne and Essie Mae Hammond. LeVergne was a 1947 graduate of North East High School. He also attended Central Missouri State and Kansas City Universities. LeVergne was a proud veteran, and served with the 1st Marine Division USMC in the Korean War where he obtained the rank of Sergeant. After his honorable discharge, he joined the Painters Union in 1949, remaining a life long member. LeVergne was a gymnastics instructor and member of KC Turners. LeVergne was lovingly called Cubby, Birdie, and Gus by friends and family. In his spare time, LeVergne loved gardening; painting; visits to the local casinos, and spending time with his family. Survivors include; wife Marjorie of 34 years; sister Suzanne Betz, daughter Lee Antoinette "Toni" Hammond-Edwards; sons Sterling X. Hammond, Bryan F. Hammond, and step son, Andrew W. Roster; 6 granddaughters; 8 great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. LeVergne is preceded in death by son LeVergne G. (Skeez) Hammond and daughter Francis Renee Hammond.
