Gloria Hanaway (Metcalf)

February 9, 1940 — May 3, 2014

Gloria Metcalf Hanaway, Blue Springs, Missouri passed away Saturday, May 3, 2014 at St Luke’s Hospice House, Kansas City MO. She was born to Evelyn and Chester Metcalf on February 9, 1940 in New Albany, Indiana. When Gloria was a small child, Evelyn was killed in a car accident. Chester remarried. Gloria had fond memories of her Stepmother Rose who helped raise her and her sister Jean.
Gloria attended Silver Street Elementary and graduated from New Albany High School. She attended Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, a time she cherished.
Gloria was a member of the RLDS Church where her father was a minister, and where she enjoyed many summer church reunions.
After living in Denver, Gloria moved to Independence Missouri in 1961. She worked at Allis Chalmers for over 20 years, first in data processing and later in administrative support for manufacturing. Gloria met Roger D. Hanaway at Allis Chalmers and they married on November 16, 1963.
Already an accomplished quilter, Gloria met Cynthia Hanson in 1985 at a rug hooking class as under the tutelage of Emma Lou Lais. They were Emma Lou’s first students. Gloria continued to quilt and hook rugs as long as her health allowed. She was grateful for having made many friends who shared her love of rug hooking in various classes and camps throughout the years.
Her loving husband, Roger who was devoted to her care, survives Gloria. She also leaves a sister Jean O’Dell (Jim), niece Karen Boiston (Dale), nephew Stephen O’Dell (Mia), great nephew Trevor, great niece Chloe, stepchildren Mark Hanaway (Wendy) and Julie Hanaway, sisters-in-law Dorothy DuBois and Nanette Marble, brothers-in–law John Hanaway, Bill Hanaway, David Hanaway (Dottie) and their families as well as her dear friends Cynthia Hanson and Susan Anderson. Her brother-in-law Paul Hanaway preceded her in death.
Gloria had a kind and generous spirit. Even in the darkest moments, she inspired all who knew her with her optimism and strength.
