James Harold Harkey, 87, of Independence, MO passed away Wednesday August 15, 2012 at Centerpoint Hospital in Independence as a result of a heart attack.
Jim was born April 6, 1925 in Kirksville, MO to Catherine (Frankfort) and Harold Harkey. He graduated from Kirksville High School in 1943 and enlisted in the Navy where he served as an Aviation Electronic Technicians Mate 2nd Class until his honorable discharge in 1946. He worked for the United States Postal Service for over 35 years first in the Railway Mail then at Kansas City, MO and retired from the Independence Post office.
He was preceded in death by his wife of over 58 years, Ruth E. Hogan Harkey, his parents, son Robert, brother George Harkey, sister Elizabeth (Betty) Reynolds and nephews Jerry and George Jr. Harkey.
His survivors include his children and their spouses: Patricia Martin (Larry), Jeffery Harkey, MD (Gail, PhD), Connie Mayta (David). Also surviving are his granddaughters Sarah and Kelly, his sister-in-law Arlene Harkey, niece Penny Henness and his beloved constant companion his little dog, Babe.
Graveside services were held (per his request) on Wednesday, August 22nd in Kirksville, MO. Memorial donations may be made to Children’s Mercy East, Resource Development Department, 2401 Gillham Rd., Kansas City, MO 64108.
