June was born in Sedalia, MO on June 21st to Otto B. and Marvel (Bohon) Decker. Throughout her life she spent nearly every year attending the Missouri State Fair with her parents and her sister Ruth (Decker) Hageman and later, with her husband Dusty and their children. June was a graduate of Smith Cotton High School in Sedalia and was crowned homecoming queen her senior year. In 1946 June married her high school sweetheart Raymond “Dusty” Harmon. While living in Sedalia they had three children, Debbie (Harmon) Cole, Brent and Keith. In early 1962 they moved to Redondo Beach, California for a short duration before moving back to Sedalia. Later in 1962 their youngest child, Kevin was born. They then moved to Independence in 1964 where they lived until October 2016. June and Dusty spent many evenings at events for their children and later in life with their grandchildren.
June was primarily a homemaker raising four children with Dusty. However she also worked part time for a photo studio in Sedalia and later while living in Independence she worked for Haub Studio in Lees Summit.
One of her favorite activities was decorating their Independence home, especially at Christmas time. Many friends and family would visit throughout the holiday season to see her beautiful Christmas decorations. In the late 1990’s their home was featured in several magazines showcasing June’s decorating skills. She also loved gardening and making their backyard into an oasis of various plants and outdoor decor. June was a long time volunteer with the Bingham-Waggoner Estate and the Vaile Mansion. She decorated many rooms over the years and gave an occasional tour.
She and Dusty also took many excursions with the friends of the Chicago Alton Railroad Group to various locations around United States. They both loved to travel, especially with this group. June loved documenting these travels in scrapbooks featuring many colorful photos and memorabilia. June also made a brief appearance as an extra in the movie Truman starring Gary Sinise, which was filmed in Independence.
Family and friends will recall June’s love of dressing in yellow or pink to various occasions, to the grocery store or even pulling weeds in the garden. She could often be spotted by her beautiful clothes and wonderful style. Her family will miss her style, smile and giggle.
She was preceded in death by her parents her only sister Ruth, her daughter Debbie Cole and her daughter-in-law Carla Harmon.
She leaves her husband of 69 years, Dusty, her sons Brent and his wife Nancy Lewis, Keith Harmon, Kevin and his wife Cindy Case-Harmon and son-in-law Robert (Bob) Cole; and four grandsons, Kalab Harmon, Harrison Harmon, William Harmon and Ian Harmon.
