Charles T. Harris, 96, passed away on Dec. 12, 2019, at the Lakewood Care Center.
Charles was born on January 15, 1923, in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Charles Harris and Adeline Truman Harris. He graduated from James Madison High School and earned his associate’s degree from Graceland College. He proudly served in the Army Air Corps during WWII with the rank of 1st Lieutenant. During his time in the service, he married Lois M. Hampton, and to this union four children were born. Upon honorable discharge in 1945, he spent his career as a bricklayer. He worked for Western Waterproofing for 15 years and retired in 1985 after 38 years as a bricklayer. He was a member of the Bricklayers Local 15 and a longtime member of the Gudgell Park Community of Christ.
Charles loved all sports – he held 14 national handball titles, played volleyball on a traveling team for 15 years, and never missed a chance to play a round of golf. He was inducted into the Missouri Handball Hall of Fame in 1990.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 75 years, Lois Harris; children, Charles Harris (Shannon), Bonnie Hudson (Jim), and Donald Harris (Jenny); 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Roberts.
A celebration of life will be held on Friday, January 10, at 6pm, at Gudgell Park Community of Christ, 500 E Gudgell Ave, Independence, MO 64055. A reception will follow the service.
