Katherine Michele “Kathe” Plake Hartford, 51, passed away on June 13, 2020, in Lee’s Summit, MO.
Kathe was born on August 27, 1968, in Kansas City, MO, the daughter of Dan D. Plake and Patricia Sczcerbacki Plake. As a young girl, she enjoyed riding horses, swimming, singing in the church choir, crafts, and participating in ACT Teens. She graduated from Truman High School in the class of 1987. She went on to Columbia College where she received her bachelor’s degrees in Business, Finance, and Accounting cum laude. She worked as an accountant for firms such as Kessinger Hunter, Bloch, RED, and Cohen-Esrey. She was a member of Sycamore Hills Baptist Church, and she was also a lifetime member of “HOG,” a Harley-Davidson owner’s group. This was where she met Kenneth “Ken” Hartford, and they married in Las Vegas on June 15, 2011. They embarked on their nine-year honeymoon traveling on their bikes from coast to coast, in their fifth-wheel to see the Pacific Northwest, as well as several cruises to the Caribbean islands. Kathe and Ken recently began curating artwork for their personal collection and renovating their home’s outdoor living space. She loved her family and friends, and she was deeply loved in return.
Survivors include her husband of nine years Ken Hartford; their four-legged fur babies Serendipity, Davidson, Bella, Ivy, Oliver, Addison, and Gray; dad and mom Richard and Pat Pennington; brother Stephen A. Plake; half-siblings Jennifer Plake Nuessen and Mark Plake; step-siblings Sheryl Janeski, Lisa Kavanaugh, and Mike Pennington; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her father Dan D. Plake; maternal grandparents Steve and Bessie Szczerbacki; paternal grandparents Grandpa and Ina Casey; uncle Robert Szczerbacki; step-siblings Teresa Florez and Daniel Pennington; and her grandmother-in-law Edith Hartford and her aunt-in-law Nadine McCoy.
A visitation will be on Friday, June 19, from 1-2pm, at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St. in Independence. A livestreamed funeral service will begin at 2pm Friday at the chapel, with cremation to follow. In Kathe’s honor, contributions are suggested to Sycamore Hills Baptist Church, Susan G.
