Amil Everett Hatcher, age 86, of Independence, Missouri passed away on June 14, 2018 at Valley Manor Care Center in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. He was a much loved husband, dad, grand dad, and friend.
Amil was born in Loveland, Iowa on December 13, 1931, the son of Clarence and Lorna Hatcher. The family moved to Wynona, Missouri in 1934, and then to Independence, Missouri in 1942. He was baptized into Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Independence on May 12, 1946. He joined the US Navy in September of 1950, where he was trained as a hospital corpsman. He married Lena Pearl Hatcher on June 12, 1952 while home on leave in Elder William and Sister Ida Pollard’s living room. He bought a Chevy coop, filled it with all their worldly possessions, and drove his bride, to where he was stationed in Pensacola, Florida. He was attached to a Marine Corps unit and served on the front lines in the Korean War until November of 1954. He went to work for the US Postal Service on April 1, 1955 where he worked as a letter carrier until he retired in January, 1987. He was ordained a deacon of Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church on January 30, 1977. As their own children grew, He and Pearl became foster parents for many, many babies and toddlers who needed a place to stay before adoption or being returned to their own families. Amil loved, cared for, and served his Lord, family, church, and friends.
He is survived by, a sister-in-law, Ruth Hatcher of Independence, two nephews, Steven and Danny Hatcher, one niece, Sharon Long; four sons, Wayne Hatcher and family of Excelsior Springs, Bruce Hatcher and family of Kansas City, Mark Hatcher and family of Kansas City, and Scott Hatcher and family of Blue Springs; 9 Grandchildren; and 24 Great Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lena Pearl Hatcher, father and mother, Clarence and Lorna Hatcher, a brother, Elden Hatcher, and a great grandson, Cade Hatcher.
Visitation and Funeral will be at Speaks Suburban Chapel 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence, Missouri. Visitation will be Sunday evening, June 17, from 6 – 8 PM. Funeral services will be held Monday, June 18 at 10:30 AM. Interment will be at Buckner Cemetery, BB Highway, Buckner Missouri.
