Lena Pearl Hatcher (Fisher)

October 14, 1929 — April 28, 2017

Lena Pearl Hatcher, age 87, of Independence, Missouri passed away on April 28, 2017 at Valley Manor Care Center in Excelsior Springs, Missouri. She was a much loved wife, mom, granny, and friend.
Pearl was born in Oak Grove, Missouri on October 14, 1929 and grew up in the Oak Grove, Levasy, and Buckner area of Missouri. She was the daughter of Paul and Lena Fisher. She married Amil Hatcher on June 15, 1952, and joined Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Independence on October 15, 1955. She worked at Buckner nursery and greenhouse while Amil was away in the Navy and later she worked part time at McCoy Elementary School cafeteria. As a homemaker, Pearl also babysat, did ironing in the days before permanent press, sewing, mending, and provided her family with many vacations through the wonder of Tupperware. As her own children grew, she missed having babies and little ones around the house, so Pearl and Amil became foster parents for many, many babies and toddlers who needed a place to stay before adoption or being returned to their own families. After her sons left home she became a volunteer at Independence Medical Center and served there for over 30 years. During this time she received the volunteer of the year award in 2004. Pearl loved, cared for, and served her family, church, and friends.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years Amil Hatcher of Valley Manor Care Center, a sister-in-law Ruth Hatcher of Independence, a nephew, Herald Fisher, two nieces, Linda Machamer, and Joyce Hulett; four sons, Wayne Hatcher and family of Excelsior Springs, Bruce Hatcher and family of Kansas City, Mark Hatcher and Family of Kansas City, and Scott Hatcher and family of Blue Springs; 9 Grandchildren; and 30 Great Grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Lena Fisher, father, Paul Fisher, brother, Arvel Fisher, and her sister, Louise Beaver.
Visitation and Funeral will be at Speaks Suburban Chapel 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence, Missouri. Visitation will be Tuesday evening, May 2, from 6 – 8 PM. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 3 at 10:00 AM. Interment will be at Buckner Cemetery, 7 Highway, Buckner Missouri.
