Wendell Ray Hathhorn, 89, of Independence, MO, passed away, Thursday, October 2, 2014 at the Kansas City Hospice House.
Private interment was in Mt. Moriah Cemetery and a Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 11, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church of Independence, MO with a reception to follow. Donations may be made in his name to Boy Scouts of America, Heart of America Council or First Presbyterian Church of Independence.
Wendell was born July 22, 1925 in Kansas City, MO to Ray and Mary (Wood) Hathhorn. He graduated from the Kansas City Junior College and later from the University of Kansas with a degree in electrical engineering. While at KU he was a member of the Army ROTC. Wendell served in the US Navy during WWII as an Electricians Mate and was stationed at Pearl Harbor, where he conducted radio training classes. Wendell began learning his skills in radio at Midland Radio School.
After the war, he married his wife of 68 years, Helen Bernadene (O’Dell) at the Van Brunt Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, MO. He co-founded, owned and operated Commenco since 1951 and currently owns CEC Realty of Kansas City. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America Troops 139 and 253 in Independence, MO, board member of Alphapointe and president and treasurer of Alpha Lions Club of Kansas City. He was a lifetime member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers. He was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of Independence, MO, Mt. Washington Masonic Lodge #614 and the Ararat Shrine Temple.
Wendell is survived by: his wife Helen; his sons, Brent (Jackie) and Brian (Betty) and his grandchildren, Christopher, Jonathan, Adam, Emily, Benjamin and Henry. He was preceded in death by his dog Jippy. Online condolences may be expressed at www.speakschapel.com
