Marie Dorothy Hatteberg (Moulton)

Dorothy Hatteberg, age 93, of Independence, MO passed away December 21, 2015. Services will be held on Saturday, December 26, with visitation, 12:00 p.m. and funeral, 2:00 p.m., at Timothy Lutheran Church, 425 NW RD Mize Road, Blue Springs, MO. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, December 28, at Cedar Cemetery in Fonda, Iowa. Dorothy was born on May 15, 1922 in Independence, MO to George and Hattie Moulton. She grew up in Fonda, IA with her three brothers. In high school, she played basketball, going to the Iowa State tournament, and graduated in 1939. Dorothy received her teaching certificate from the University of Northern Iowa in 1941 and began her teaching career in Sumner, IA. During WWII, she joined the Marine Corps to “free a man for front line duty.” After the war, she married Vern Hatteberg, a former classmate. They raised their children and enjoyed life on a farm near Fonda, IA until Vern was killed in a tragic accident in 1970. With two children at home and two in college, she went back to school to earn her bachelor’s degree. She taught junior high until she retired in 1984. Dorothy moved to Independence in 1993 and enjoyed life filled with family, church, bible studies and senior citizen groups. Her interests included travel, reading, flowers, bible study, financial markets, football and basketball. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern, and son Rodney; parents, George and Hattie; three brothers, George, Arthur and Francis and sister Hattie Moulton; and two great grandchildren, Aiden and Lilly Painter. She is survived by her five children, Janice Downing, Roger Hatteberg, Jane Hatteberg, Randy Hatteberg and Jeri Hatteberg; five grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
