Jack L. Hattey

Jack L. Hattey, 80, of Independence, MO, passed away Saturday, January 14th at Independence Regional Health Center. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 18th at Carson-Speaks Chapel. Visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel. Burial in Mound Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Jack was born September 18, 1925 in Kansas City, MO, son of Harold W. and Elizabeth Olive (Stevens) Hattey. He lived with his parents and siblings on their farm in Bates City, MO, later moving to Independence. Jack married Dona Wertz on December 8, 1946. He served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego, CA where he served on the battleship Iowa. Upon being discharged from the Navy in 1948, Jack and Dona purchased and lived 10 years on the family farm. While they farmed, hauled grain and cattle, Jack graduated from Agriculture School under the GI bill. He also worked at General Motors and Lake City before going to work for Andes and Roberts Construction Company in 1954 through 1976. Jack and Dona moved to Independence, MO in 1958 and resided there with their children. In 1976, they began operating Jack�s Flat Work, a concrete flatwork company until his retirement in 1989. After his retirement, he started flower gardening and won a neighborhood beautification award. Mr. Hattey is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dona E. (Wertz) Hattey of the home; his four children, daughter Bonnie Hutchcroft-Hattey of Blue Springs, MO, Brenda and Terry Flowers of Independence, MO, son Brad and Cathy Hattey of Warsaw, MO and Barny and Karisa Hattey of Eastern Jackson County, MO; 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Joe and Maxine Hattey of Bates City, MO, David and Doris Hattey of Liberty, MO; two sisters, Betty Himes of Independence, MO, Jeanette and Bob Jackson of Lamarque, TX and many loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Nancy Fenton of Seattle, WA.
