Robert Edward Hawkins, 96, has gone to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He left this earth and took his flight to Heaven from Oak Grove Nursing Home in Oak Grove, Missouri on Saturday, April 27, 2019. He was born in Fort Worth Texas on July 27, 1922. He graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas, Texas in 1939 and from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois in 1943. He became a professor at Dallas Bible College, where he met his future wife, Florine Hause, whom he married in 1950 in Fort Worth, Texas. That same year, Bob and Florine went to Guyana, South America as missionaries and Bible translators to the WaiWai Indian tribe deep in the jungle of Guyana. They stayed there for almost 30 years, and today there is a WaiWai Indian church reading and preaching the Bible which he translated into their language.
He was preceded in death by his father William Edward Hawkins, his mother Madelle Thomas Hawkins, two brothers William Neill Hawkins and James Rader Hawkins, and a daughter, Esther Faith Hawkins.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 69 years, Florine Hause Hawkins, two sons, Howard Hawkins of Austin, Texas and David Hawkins of Odessa, Missouri, a daughter, Joy Lovick of Odessa, Missouri, 13 grandchildren in Missouri, Texas and North Carolina, and 3 great-grandchildren in Texas.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Odessa, Missouri, officiated by Pastor Merle Mosley of Community Bible Church. A light fellowship meal will be served after the service in the fellowship hall, when family and friends can greet one another.
