Gregory Len Hawley, 50 of Independence, MO passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Truman Medical Center West, with his family and friends at his bedside as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Cremation is planned with a memorial visitation to be held from 6 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday evening, January 15, 2009 at the Beacon Heights Community of Christ Church 19402 Holke Rd. in Independence, MO. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 16, 2009 at Beacon Heights Community of Christ Church. Donations may be made to the Arabia Museum Foundation in c/o Truman Heartland Community Foundation, 300 N. Osage Independence, MO. This is an educational foundation for children that Greg was deeply involved with. Greg was born February 7, 1958 in Independence, MO to Harland M. and Florence E. Hawley and has been a lifelong area resident He graduated from William Chrisman in 1976 and after attending college, he worked in the family owned HVAC business. In 1988 working along side family and friends, he was instrumental in the recovery and operation of the Arabia Steamboat Museum. He was an accomplished speaker, author and devoted husband, father, uncle and grandfather. He leaves behind his wife Karen; three children, Derek Hawley, Kristin Hawley-Smith and her husband Chris and Megan Hawley; a grandson, Jack Christopher Smith; his parents, Harland M. and Florence E. Hawley; a brother, David Hawley and his wife Laurie; a sister, Rita Scherer and her husband Mark and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and close friends.
