Harold Hawley

October 16, 1928 — December 5, 2014

Harold Norman Hawley, 86, of Independence, MO passed away at St Luke’s Hospice House December 5, 2014. He was born in Garibaldi, OR October 16, 1928, the second son of Herbert Roe and Mildred (Lenhardt) Hawley. Harold was a master cabinet maker in the Lamoni, IA and Independence, MO areas, having learned his trade as a young man in Woodburn, OR. One of his special talents was building organ consoles and installing pipe organs for the Temple Pipe Organ Company. He was an active elder in the Church of Jesus Christ Hill Cumorah Restoration Branch. He was a member of the Eastview Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Emily Mae, and his daughter, Nancy Anderson. Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Judith, of the home; daughter, Judy Cole , Lamoni, IA; sons, Alma Hawley, Lamoni, IA; James (Jimmy) Hawley, Leon, IA; Max Hawley (Jodi), Independence, MO; brother, Herbert R. Hawley, Jr. (Luella), Independence MO; sister, Luel Hawley-Sedlak, Santa Barbara, CA. Harold and Judith were world travelers and lived in a kibbutz in Israel accompanied by their young son, Max. They did church work in Mitla, Oaxaca, Mexico among the Zapotec Indians and later in Australia where Harold drove over 20,000 miles to visit and work with church members. He is survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his countless friends. A memorial celebration will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 21, at the Church of Jesus Christ Hill Cumorah Restoration Branch, 4516 S Phelps RD, Independence, MO 64055, (816) 468-6461). Contributions in Harold’s memory may be made to St. Luke’s Hospice House and/ or The Council of Restoration Elders (CRE)/ SEAM or LAMB to support ongoing missionary efforts. The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of Harold’s caregivers and to the staff of St Luke’s Hospice House for their kind and loving care of Harold.
