William C. “Bill’ Hayes, 80, Independence, MO passed away Feb. 25, 2017. Funeral Mass will be noon, Friday, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 611 N Liberty St, Independence, MO 64050. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Thursday at Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Cremation will follow at a later date.
Bill was born April 13, 1936 in Independence and graduated from Manual High School in Kansas City. He was an airplane mechanic at TWA for thirty-one years before his retirement in 2002. He was an avid crappie fisherman at his place on Truman Lake where he always caught the biggest and most fish. He was a talented and accomplished artist and woodworker. He spent four years as a caregiver to his ailing wife, Sue Hayes, who required constant care until her death in 2014. Most of all he was a revered mentor to his grandchildren.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife Sue Hayes. He is survived by sons Phil Hayes and wife Pamela, Lee’s Summit, MO; Bill Hayes and wife Renee, Liberty, MO; Todd Hayes, Overland Park, KS; twelve grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; step-daughter Marsha Lowery, Kearney, MO; nephews Jerry Lee Fisher and wife Vicky, Independence, MO; Dick Fisher, Phoenix, AZ; Kent Fisher and wife Laura, Olathe, KS; brother-in-law Jerry Jackson and wife Marilyn, Independence, MO; and former wife Maria Hayes, Shawnee, KS.
