Harry F. Hays, Jr., Independence, MO, passed away Friday, August 22, 2014.

Harry was born on November 10, 1931, in Independence, MO, to the late Harry F., Sr. and Rachel M. (LaRose) Hays. He married Anna L. “Dee Dee” Frank in March 1948. Harry owned and operated Flynn Sign Company for over 45 years before retiring in 1993. To accommodate his company’s expansion, he began flying for business, becoming a certified flight instructor (CFI) and owning several aircraft that were based at the East Kansas City Airport (3GV), Grain Valley, MO. As a member of the International Aerobatic Club (IAC) Harry was also a champion aerobatic competitor, performer, instructor, judge, and a member of the 1981 United States Aerobatic Team. In addition, Harry was a 50-year member of Mt. Washington Masonic Lodge No. 416. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, woodworking and was a member of the Lake Tapawingo Sportsman’s Club.

Survivors include his son, Dennis Hays of Blacklick, OH; daughter, Claudia Moore and husband, Don, of Lake Tapawingo, MO; grandchildren, Jimmy Hays, Angie Leopard, Frank Hays, Chellie White, Mike Waller, and Kerri Waller; 10 great-grandchildren; his sister, Linda Stewart of Independence; his brother, Doug Hays and wife, Carolyn, also of Independence; and additional nieces, nephews, and family. Harry was preceded in death by his wife, Dee Dee, in 1974; infant daughter Deborah Ann; his parents, Harry, Sr. and Rachel; stepmother, Allene Hays; and a stepfather, Alma Hirst.

Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 4, 2014, at Speaks Suburban Chapel 18020 E. 39th St., Independence, MO 64055. Memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 4, 2014, at the funeral home. Harry’s request was in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Kansas City Hospice House.
