Helen Bernadine Hathhorn, known affectionately as Bernie, passed away on March 11, 2024, in Leawood, Kansas. She was born on August 13, 1926, in Lexington, Missouri.
Bernie led a fulfilling life dedicated to public service and education. Before earning a master's degree in education, Bernie worked for the Civil Aeronautics Administration, leaving a positive impact on those she encountered throughout her career. She then sold real estate and was a travel agent, helping many turn houses into homes and enjoy new experiences around the world. When she started her career in education, she taught math at the elementary and middle school levels before retiring as a ninth-grade math teacher.
Outside of work, Bernie had a keen interest in traveling and reading. Her curiosity about the world knew no bounds, and she found great joy in exploring new destinations and delving into the pages of a good book.
Bernie was a cherished mother to Brian Hathhorn and Brent Hathhorn. She is also survived by her adoring grandchildren: Adam (Grace) Hathhorn, Emily Hathhorn, Benjamin Hathhorn, Henry Hathhorn, Chris Hathhorn, Jon (Ann) Hathhorn; great-grandchildren Lilian Hathhorn and August Hathhorn. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wendell Ray Hathhorn; her father Dewey Lee O’Dell and mother Edna Lee (Geary) O’Dell.
A visitation will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Independence on March 23, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM followed by a Funeral Service at the same location starting at 11:15 AM. The interment will take place at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City from 12:30 PM to 1:00 PM.
In honor of Bernie's life and legacy, let us remember her dedication to education, her love for exploring the world around her, and the warmth she brought to all those fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in peace knowing she was loved by many.
