Thomas Cashen Hellstein, 87, passed away on August 16, 2014 following a stroke earlier this year.
Born in Connecticut on June 9, 1927 to Florence and Theodore Hellstein, he grew up with his older brother Ted, his younger sister Jeanne, and his youngest brother Dick. They moved often but kept their center of life near the West Springfield, Massachusetts and Hartford Connecticut area. They also lived in towns outside New England including Detroit, Dallas and Kansas City. During World War II the family actually moved all four summers of his high school years though his freshman and junior years were both at Bishop Lillis high school. It was at Lillis that he met the love of his life Kathleen (Katie) Emma Delaney. They finally met when he came back his junior year to Kansas City because Katie had only come to Lillis as a sophomore. Following high school graduation in 1945 Tom joined the Navy just before the end of the war. Following his discharge he attended the Kansas City Art Academy for a few years. Tom and Katie had kept in touch after high school (and the war) and married in Kansas City, April 3, 1948. Tom worked primarily as a sign painter and over the years they lived in Macon, Chillicothe and Moberly but returned to Kansas City and eventually settled in Sugar Creek.
Tom and Kathleen have four children: Tim Hellstein (Rena), Peggy Gertner (David), Janet d'Arcy (Thomas) and John Hellstein (Denise). Tom and Kathleen were married for 62 years before her passing on October 1, 2010. Tom is survived by his four children as well as his sister Jeanne and brother Ted.
He is preceded in death by his brother Dick. Tom was a special person who had an innate ability to establish special connections with children and those with special needs. He was always a child at heart.
A closed casket family greeting will begin at 9 AM at the church. The funeral mass will be held at St. Bernadette's Church, 9020 E 51st Terrace, Kansas City, MO at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 23rd. Family only will then proceed to the funeral site where Tom and Katie will be reunited.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be directed to the Sugar Creek Civic Relief Commission, 11232 Chicago Ave. Sugar Creek, Mo 64054 816-254-7234.
