Zelda Doreen VaLeu Herrick, also known as Grandma Z, was reunited with her Heavenly Father and many family and friends on September 26, 2013. She was born on October 19, 1918 in Quincy, IL. Zelda was the youngest of six children born to Ben and Bertha VaLeu. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Paul J. Herrick, Sr., her parents and all of her siblings. Zelda was a homemaker, but at various times in her life she worked outside of the home. She was a teller at the First National Bank of Independence and later drove a school bus for Pace Bus Company. She safely delivered children to and from school for 13 years, before she retired in 1976. She and her husband both volunteered at Independence Regional Health Center for 14 years after they retired. Zelda is survived by her son, Paul Herrick, Jr. of Tucson, AZ and her daughter, Debbie Rust and husband Mark of Independence, five grandchildren; Amy Jolley and husband Doug, Andrea Nichols and husband Ross, Aaron Rust and wife Claire all of Independence, Kimberley Sadler and husband Pat of Fort Meyers, FL, and Kristen Feazell and husband Scott of Tampa, FL. Zelda was great-grandma to 7 children in Independence and 2 in Florida. Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday at the chapel with burial to follow at Mound Grove Cemetery.
