Edith Emily Hicks, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, April 1, 2022. She was 98. Edith was born to John and Edith Young on October 25, 1923 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
At a young age Edith met a man named Millard at church. They became quick friends and several years later were married. To this union came four children. Edith loved her family fiercely and was blessed to be able to stay at home with them until the age of 45. At that point she began her career with the IRS. There she performed clerical work for the government until she retired at the age of 70. Edith loved to dance and looked to any opportunity to dress up in a ballroom gown and make her way around the dance floor. She was always fun to be around, had a good sense of humor and never took a day for granted. Edith loved to read biographies about Hollywood actors and romance novels and enjoyed watching movies, listening to music and traveling. She was a very active woman her entire life and didn’t depend on transportation often because she enjoyed to walk. Edith was brave, selfless and never hesitated to stand up for those that needed her support. Her kind smile and warm spirit will be missed dearly.
Edith is survived by her children, Blanche Mesteth, Linda Klett (Merle), John Norris and Kathleen “Kathy” Norris; 9 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Thomas “Tommy” Buerhaus and great-grandsons, Larry Lone and Frankie Romig.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St. Judes, a charity that Edith held close to her heart.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2022 at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, Missouri.
