David Richard Hines, 95, of East Lakefield Township, Michigan, died peacefully on June 27, 2021 at the home of his daughter in Kansas City, Kansas following a long illness.
Mr. Hines was born the second of three sons to Byrle L. and Effie Lucinda (Fullmer) Hines in Milford, Michigan on May 16, 1926. He graduated from Walled Lake High School in 1943 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy the next day. He served stateside during World War II, and met his future wife, Joan Macrae of Independence, Missouri, at a USO dance in Washington, DC on St. Patrick’s Day, 1945. They were married in Kansas City, Kansas on May 23, 1946. Five children were born to them between 1952 and 1965. They began their family in Oakland County, Michigan, in 1964 returning to Joan’s hometown of Independence, Missouri where they spent the next 22 years.
A man of many talents, Dave worked as a brickmason with his father and brothers, drove for Greyhound through most of the 1950s, and had an 18-year career as a draftsman at Armco Steel in Kansas City, Missouri, retiring in 1982. He was ordained a priest in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Community of Christ) in 1974 and an elder in 1986. Dave’s gift was with older people—he served as chaplain of several nursing homes and was faithful in service through driving seniors to church, doctor’s appointments, and grocery shopping for many years.
Dave and Joan moved to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in 1986 and enjoyed eighteen years there before her death in 2004. As a widower, Dave volunteered at the Curtis (MI) Public Library and the Seney (MI) National Wildlife Refuge. Dave lived independently in his “little house in the big woods” until the fall of 2019, when he moved in with one of his sons and later back to the Kansas City area to his daughter’s home. In October 2020 he was diagnosed with gall bladder cancer and chose home hospice. Special thanks to Rachal, Jennifer, Matt, Heather, and the other personnel of Lumicare Hospice in Blue Springs, Missouri who were so kind and helpful during these past eight months.
Dave was preceded in death by his wife, his son Paul in 2016, his parents in 1969 and 1974, and his brother Eugene in 2015. He is survived by his brother Robert (Audrey) of Northville, MI; by four of his children: David, Steven, Matthew, and Elaine; by six grandchildren; by nine great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He is further survived by loving friends including Linda Blanchard, John Glenn, Nadine Volz, Del and Anne Alden, and Clayton Seder.
In accordance with his wishes, no services will be held. Memorial contributions to Feeding America, Food for the Poor, or the Carter Center would be welcomed.
