John W. Hix, 90. Sugar Creek, MO passed away April 5, 2018. Services will be 10 am, Tuesday, April 10 at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave., Independence, MO 64052; interment at Mound Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be 6-8 pm, Monday at the chapel. The family requests contributions to Sugar Creek United Methodist Church, 415 N. Sterling Ave, Sugar Creek, MO 64054.
John was born Jan. 20, 1928 in Sugar Creek, MO and was a life-long resident except for his time in the Navy during WW II. He joined the Navy immediately following his graduation from Northeast High School. While in the Navy, he served on the USS Wilkes Barre, the USS Harry F. Bauer and the USS Dayton. After returning from the War, he began working at the Standard Oil Refinery in his hometown where he began a thirty-two year career until his retirement in 1982. He was lifelong member of the Sugar Creek United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting deer and particularly hunting turkey. He made his own turkey calls. He was a gardener who was always willing to share the tomatoes and green beans he grew. He loved sharing life lessons with his children and grandchildren especially about hunting and other sports. He always supported their sports activities. He was a member of VFW Post #3976 and the NRA.
John was preceded in death by grandson Corey Richardson and sisters Opal Montgomery and Nancy Manners. He is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Shirley Hix, of the home; son John F. Hix, Independence, MO; daughter Mendy Hix, Blue Springs, MO; grandchildren Kyle Richardson and wife Jessica, Hutto, TX; Garrett Wendel, Sugar Creek, MO; Tanner Wendel, Blue Springs, MO; John W. Hix; Abbigail Hix, both of Independence, MO; Jonathan Dorris; Grace Dorris, both of Blue Springs, MO and great-grandsons Nash & Cohen Richardson.
