Dorothy Lois Carter Holmes
Dorothy Lois Carter Holmes, born September 23, 1923, died Tuesday morning, October 31, 2006, in the hospital, in Clackamas, Oregon. She died of a sudden non-traumatic clot to her lung, which led to profound anoxic brain injury. She was lovingly surrounded by two of her children, five grandchildren and their spouses. Dotty was the daughter of Gladys and Harvey Carter, sister of Winifred Blum, David, Richard (Dick) & her twin Donald Carter. She earned an AA at Graceland College, BA at Los Angeles State College and then earned an MA from Kansas State. She worked as a school teacher, social service worker and counselor. Dorothy was formerly married to Reed Holmes for 49 years. Together they had five children: David, Carol, Joy, Jewell and Lawrence. She will be missed by her children and their spouses, 15 grandchildren, their spouses and 5 great-grandchildren. She is remembered as a generous, feisty and loving woman of deep faith. She loved her church (Community of Christ) and her family. She was happiest when surrounded by both. Her prayers were unselfconsciously powerful and one felt in the presence of a Loving God as she addressed her Creator during family times of prayer. Visitation and viewing is at 1pm and the funeral service at 2:30pm Saturday November 11, 2006 at Stone Church, 1012 W. Lexington, Independence.
