Glen E. Holmes

April 1, 1948 — May 28, 2020

Glen Edward Holmes, named after his grandfather Glenn Holmes, passed away peaceably on May 28, 2020, aged 72, at Monterey Park Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Independence, MO after a morning filled with socializing and a good lunch.

Glen was born April 1, 1948, to Mary and Ivan Holmes, at the Independence Sanitarium in Independence, Missouri. The family participated in many church and youth activities of the Blue Ridge RLDS (Community of Christ) congregation. He grew up in Independence and was involved in youth groups and Boy Scouts, obtaining the designation of Eagle Scout. Glen was a local newspaper delivery boy and recognized in the paper for his efforts. Glen attended Independence schools, graduating from Van Horn High School. He attended Graceland College, Lamoni, Iowa, and graduated from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, with a Geology degree. Glen was stationed in South Korea and played clarinet in the Army Band, expressing his appreciation for the culture through intentional interactions with local residents and photography. After the service, he obtained work on the Alaskan Pipeline and enjoyed hiking, camping, canoeing, and nature photography while experiencing the Alaska wilderness. He then lived with his parents in Independence and participated in the Big Brother Program. Later he moved to an apartment at Pleasant Heights. He spent much of his time with companion Betty Fares, also residing at Pleasant Heights. During this period Glen and Betty regularly attended the Daily Prayer for Peace at the Independence Community of Christ Temple and participated in the Stone Church Community of Christ congregation. Later in life, due to illness, Glen moved to Monterey Park Center, where thanks to his social personality he was widely known to residents and staff.

He enjoyed playing board games and participating in many group activities. He was a financial supporter of Outreach International, an international humanitarian organization. Glen was generous with family and friends whom he invited as guests on his trips abroad. He loved sports including tennis, golf, and the KC Chiefs.

Despite suffering from disability he was known for his sense of memory, whether it be family birthdays or details about those caring for him. He was kind and caring, loved family, and always made a point to connect with loved ones daily. He was loved and will be missed by family and friends. He leaves behind sister Anne Romig and husband Ron, brother David Holmes, nieces Kiana (Don) Griffin and family Aubrey and Cale, and Rene Romig, MD.

Private services will be held at Speaks Suburban Chapel, followed by interment at Mound Grove Cemetery, Independence, Missouri, with military honors.
