Melvin Leroy Howell passed away peacefully on Friday, April 15, 2022 in Independence, Missouri. He was 79. Melvin was born to Melvin and Margaret Howell on June 27, 1942 in Dekalb County, Missouri.
Melvin was a passionate man with a zest for life. After graduating from Niles Township high school in 1960 Melvin continued his education at Central Missouri State College. He earned his bachelor’s degree with an emphasis on German and Russian then enlisted in the United States Air Force serving 4 years. Returning from service he attended Missouri Western college to receive his teaching credentials. Melvin taught at various schools in the state of Nebraska before being employed by the the Raytown School District where he taught for many years before retiring in 2007. He continued his education at Northwest Missouri State receiving an M.S. in education. During retirement Mel’s passion pushed him to volunteer. He spent many hours of his time at the Powell Gardens, took several mission trips with the Oak Grove Baptist Church to work with the deaf ministry in Puerto Rico and created blankets to donate to local shelters. Melvin enjoyed traveling the world and taking adventures with his wife Joyce. Their favorite trip was to Hawaii with the entire family in which they celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. Melvin and Joyce spent 48 years creating a life together. To this union came 2 children. Melvin will be missed greatly by many friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; children, Christopher Howell and Andrea Bohnert (Nick); brother in law Donald Aden (Laurel); uncle, Jim Shafer and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; brother, Richard Howell; uncle, Bill Shafer; aunts, Rosalie Whitted, Helen Swaford and Ann Fenton.
