Judith Hoyt

Judith Louise (Bailey) Hoyt, age 78, was born April 19, 1935 to Howard D. and Viola (Hartley) Bailey, in Kansas City, Missouri. She passed away on April 4, 2014. She was the oldest of eight children, six girls and two boys.
Judy attended Pleasant Valley grade school before moving to Northwest Missouri where she attended Darlington Elementary school and graduated from Albany High School before returning to the Kansas City area in 1953 where she has lived since. She was pre-deceased by her parents and a brother, David R. Bailey and sisters Virginia Crosby and Carolyn King. In 1958, she married Robert L. Hoyt and their marriage has spanned 56 years. She is survived by her husband, “Bob”, son Roger B. Hoyt and his wife Diana, and daughter Lisa Gayle Lewis and husband James, four grandchildren, Daniel B. Dysart, Kelsey Lewis, Jamie Lewis and Aaron James Lewis. Her surviving siblings are: Howard Donald Bailey, Raymore, Mo, Millie Sealey, Lamar, Mo., Maryln Winstead, Raymore, MO, and Kathryn Zuber, Independence, MO. She is also survived by 32 nieces and nephews and 40 great nieces and nephews. Judy has been active in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints from childhood. When she couldn’t attend her church, she went to others and won a bible and pen for perfect attendance at the Baptist Church where she taught a children’s class at age 14. She was active in their girls auxiliary. While in the country she worked as a “hired girl”, in 25 homes as a child. She also made quilts and sewed her own clothing. In the Kansas City-Independence area she taught Sunday School, Skylarks, Orioles, O-Teens. She was a Cub Scout Den and Webelos mother, assistant woman’s leader, Bible School worker, choir member, cook and baker for various projects and events. She attended several RLDS churches including, Van Brunt Congregation in Kansas City and Spring Branch, Eden Heights and New Hope congregation’s in Independence.
Judy was employed by Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Company and Ozark Life 16 years followed by several B. Loehr & Company temporary assignments. Judy attended Draughon’s College of Commerce to learn shorthand, also Patricia Stevens School of Charm. She attended Central Missouri State College and the University of Missouri of Kansas City where she study English and nurtured her passion for writing. Judy was an avid gardener, canning hundreds of jars annually and freezing and dehydrating produce. She won several ribbons for canned and baked goods and for impromptu cooking contests at the Missouri State Fair. She won a First Place in desserts at a Neighborhood Council/Examiner contest in 1984. For 16 years she took produce to Farmers Market and sold. She was also a quilter and a seamstress. The Hoyt’s were town parents to a nursing student, Gayle Chrisman (Boren), three college students and a foreign exchange student from Norway. Judy wrote two family history books including picture, letters, documents, certificates and biographies for each side of her family for future generations so that information would not be lost. During the last few years of her life, while battling Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, she wrote two more books; her autobiography for her children, and her husband’s biography including the Hoyt family history. Her last project was a double wedding ring quilt she had intended to finish 23 years ago, but she finally completed just before entering the hospital for the last time. Judy’s life is a testament to her love of God, family and her church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the New Hope R.L.D.S. church Needy Family Fund, or the Community Service League. Services will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 7, 2014 at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 18020 E. 39th Street, Independence, MO 64055. Interment will follow in Mound Grove Cemetery.
