Psalm 118:24, “This is the day which the Lord hath made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.” The Lord chose Wednesday, January 17, 2018, for Archie Fred Hughes to be in paradise with his Master for all eternity. Mr. Hughes, born December 17, 1933, was a resident of Independence, MO since 1964. He was the son of the late Harold C. and Laverne E. (Finley) Hughes of Stover, MO. He was baptized as a Christian as a child at the First Baptist Church of Stover, MO. Prior to graduating from his hometown high school, he was taught at two one-room country schools, Big Buffalo and Post Oak. After high school he attended the Central Missouri State College at Warrensburg, MO, which is now a state university. In May, 1954, he entered the U.S. Army. After basic training at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, he trained as a guidance control specialist for atomic weapons at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He finished his tour of duty in Germany in one of only four 280MM atomic weapons battalions After nearly 32 years, Mr. Hughes retired as a Material Handling General Supervisor from the Ford Motor Company at Claycomo, MO. He is a member of Country Meadows Baptist Church and also a past member of Bethel Baptist Church and Noland Road Baptist Church in Independence, MO.
He was also a past Commander of VFW Post 1738, a member of the Independence Patriotic Council, American Legion Post 21, and a Mason of the Independence Lodge No. 76. Archie Hughes is survived by his wife, Ann Kathleen (Butcher) of the home, daughter, Kristin Leiker and husband Steve of Independence, MO, son-in-law, Doc Lam, husband of his deceased daughter Kelley Bury Lam, two granddaughters, Katie and Alli Leiker, and one grandson, Anthony Bury. Mr. Hughes also has a sister, Patsy Maples of Bland, MO (now deceased), and two brothers, Alvin Hughes and wife Nancy of Olathe, KS, and Arnold Hughes (now deceased) and his wife Betty of Wake Village, TX. Visitation will be Tuesday, January 23, at 9:00 A.M. and services to follow at 11:00 A.M. at Speaks Suburban Chapel in Independence, MO. Burial will be at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO. “Life on earth may be short, but yet many lives have I touched while here.
