Dorothy Helen Hughes, 94, Sugar Creek, MO passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014.
Dorothy was born March 18, 1920 in Rhodes, IA the daughter of Victor Glaud and Delia Emma (Burg) Lents. She attended Graceland College and graduated from the Independence Sanitarium School of Radiology and worked for over 25 years with Western Missouri Radiology. Dorothy moved to Boise City, OK for a short time before moving to Fair Play, MO where she retired near Stockton Lake. She then moved back to Independence to be near family. Dorothy was a member of South Crysler Community of Christ where she was very active. Dorothy also volunteered for the Salvation Army and Fairmount Community Center. Dorothy stayed active and enjoyed gardening, baking, ceramics, Bunko watching the KC Chiefs and regularly attending her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sporting events.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert Hughes in 1994; granddaughter, Kelly Wheatley; brother, Donald Lents; sister in law, Helen Lents; and her parents.
Survivors include her daughters, Helen West, and D. Kay Wheatley and husband John; grandchildren, Carolyn Storey and husband David, Christine Foster and husband, Shawn; great grandchildren, Wesley Storey, Ryan Rosario, Dustin Roper, Shelby Foster, Spencer Foster and Caroline Foster; three great great grandchildren; and additional nieces, nephews, and family.
Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 12, 2014 at South Crysler Community of Christ; 3100 S. Crysler Ave, Independence, MO 64055 with family to greet friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the South Crysler Community of Christ or the Animals Best Friends.
