Roland Lee Hughes

Roland Lee Hughes, 97, of Independence, MO went to be with the Lord on October 28, 2021. Roland was born in Independence, MO on July 12, 1924 to Verge (V.P.) and Rosa Lee Hughes. He was raised in Joplin, MO where he met and later married Jean Hughes of Deerfield, MO on December 10, 1942.

He was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving as a Radioman First Class in the South Pacific during World War II from 1942-1945. After his honorary discharge, he worked as a valued employee for Standard Oil Company and Independence Power and Light before going into business for himself, managing several service stations all carrying the name of Hughes Service in Independence, MO and surrounding areas.

He was a creative and entrepreneurial businessman, turning his gas stations into convenience stores long before that trend developed, he always put the customer first. After selling his service stations in the early 80’s, he and Jean worked together each evening for many years at Fitness Showcase Store in Kansas City, MO. He enjoyed woodworking in his shop, Kansas City sports and most of all spending time with his family and doing whatever he could to make Jean happy. He was a longtime member of First Christian Church of Independence where he served in many leadership positions.

He was preceded in death by his wife and son, Gary Lee, by his parents, and his 9 brothers and sisters.

He is survived by his son, Kelly and his wife, Pam, of Lenexa, KS; two grandchildren, Andrew Lynn of Kansas City, MO and Jamie Casey and her husband Sean of Shawnee, KS; two great-grandchildren Ellie and Emily Casey and numerous nieces and nephews. His family and all those that his life touched will miss him greatly.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the First Christian Church of Independence. A family graveside service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at Mound Grove Cemetery in Independence, MO.
