George C Hulett Jr.

George Curtis Hulett, Jr., 86, a resident of the Villages of Jackson Creek, passed away Wednesday, June 25, 2014, after a brief illness. George was born August 1, 1927 in Kansas City, Mo., the son of George Curtis Hulett, Sr., and Helen Alice Kelsey who preceded him in death. Also preceding him were two younger brothers, Donald Maurice Hulett and Barton Kelsey Hulett.George grew up in the Maywood and Englewood areas of Independence. Musically gifted, he learned to play the piano and organ and often played at Maywood Baptist Church. He played the flute in the band at Northeast High School and many years later in the Spirit of Independence Band. When he graduated High School in 1944, he wanted to serve his country and joined the United States Merchant Marines. He was sent on two deployments as a Ships Cook 2nd Class aboard the Cape Alava, and New London. After he was discharged in 1946, George went back to Independence where he married Kathleen Eloise Harcourt, June 19, 1948, and then opened a window and auto glass shop on 23rd St., under the name of Hulett Glass, Co. In 1956 he and the family moved the business to Clearwater Florida but after nine years, moved back to Independence. Staying with what he knew, he worked as a salesman for Harding Glass Industries for 27 years until retirement.George loved hunting and fishing, but most of all family. He was involved in his sons activities including being a Cub Scout Master, Asst. Scout Master for Troop 216, Eastgate Christian Church, and later as a district commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America. He earned his Wood Badge award and was an honorary warrior in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, two sons, Chris D. Hulett (Cyndi), of Independence, Mo., William R. Hulett (Jane) of Overland Park, Ks., a grandson, Brian P. Hulett (Tracy), two granddaughters, Patricia Hulett Cross (Paul), and Jennifer Hulett, and two great-grandsons, Tanner Cross and Ethan Hulett. Visitation will be held Sunday, June 29, 6-8 p.m. at Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington, Independence, Mo. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Monday, June 30, at the same location, followed by interment at Floral Hills Cemetery, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd., Kansas City, Mo.
